5After more than a year as my main laptop . . . .
By Scott Davies
I originally bought this with the idea of modding it into a "hackintosh" (i.e. running the Mac OS). I later decided that I didn't want to do that, and instead took it with me on a year-and-a-half trip to the Philippines as my "backup". I'm glad that I did, because my almost-three-times-as-expensive HP 17" failed less than two months into the trip (yes, I admittedly knew about HP reliability when I bought it, but it was too good a price to pass up, and I was hoping I might be one of the "lucky" HP owners whose machine didn't die). Because laptop deals like I can get in the U.S. aren't available there and the horrible cost of shipping to SE Asia, I decided to make do with the eeePC for my remaining 16 months there. And to my surprise, I ended up being very satisfied with it.

Because many of my laptop needs are fairly heavy-duty, I didn't expect satisfactory performance out of a lightweight like the eeePC (with an Atom 1.33 processor and 1G RAM). But it handled everything that I wanted to do fairly well, though a bit slowly when I had too many apps running or too many browser tabs open. And it did so with no quirks and zero failures.

Even though I'm currently shopping for a more heavy-duty laptop to take with me on my next trip (probably also an Asus, for reliability reasons), the eeePC 1201 will definitely be traveling with me. Though this time it'll have an additional 2G RAM . . . which BTW is why I ended up at this page, while trying to find the appropriate DIMM (which appears to cost only $14 at Amazon for Crucial brand with free shipping).

In terms of durability, the only negative was that the silver coating on the trackpad click button eventually wore off so that now there's an oval of white plastic showing through. But other than that, it still looks and works like a new machine.

12/3/12 Update: Power supply jack has failed -- can no longer charge. The problem is the jack (inside the comp) and not the power supply. This problem seems to be common with all eeePC's that use this very small jack. I have ordered a replacement jack (a tiny little thing that cost about $5 on Amazon) and a soldering gun, because tearing apart the unit and soldering will be required. Problem still ahead is that I'm not very good at soldering so I haven't done it yet. If you leave the power supply plugged in most of time while using it and move around a lot (like I do), it might be good to avoid units that use tiny plugs/jacks.

5Asus EEE PC 1201HAB

I bought this product as a gift for someone special and although the new owner isn't tech-savvy I'm sure it will be quite as amazing as I feel it is.
