5Best light-weight netbook for the price, happy owner
By Sun Lee
I've been an Apple user for the longest time, and recently I had to "downgrade" for money reasons. I've also been familiar with Windows and Linux for a while so I decided to get a portable netbook that I could learn to program on, on the go. I researched for days and ended up with this Acer, specifically this model for its processor. I also purchased 8GB RAM upgrade with the netbook because Ubuntu didnt run so well (with more than 2 programs running at a time) with 2GB and it's so fast! I mean, it runs way faster and smoother (when running multiple programs) than my A1226 Macbook Pro (3,1) with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB RAM.
It is super light-weight, the screen is really really nice (though it is glossy; I will miss the matte screen on my MBP), and the keyboard is really fun and great to type on once you get used to the chiclet style keys. Then only problem I have with the keyboard is the arrow keys; they are way too tiny even for me (I am a 5'3" petite girl).
The black top cover is actually glittery, which you can only notice in very bright-lit environments. It kinda looks cool actually.
The battery life is about 4 hours with normal use (e.g. in my case when I'm writing and running code on a text editor and terminal, and running WiFi at the same time with moderate web-surfing) and about 3 when you're watching videos on a secondary screen and doing whatever else on your primary screen. The actual battery is very small compared to a lot of netbooks, which makes the 7-or-so-hr battery life on Atom processor netbooks with their lunky 6-cell batteries not so different proportionately.
It also has HDMI output and 3 USB ports, along with I think a DVI output, so that's a good number of options.
Dimensions-wise, compared to a Macbook Air (the newest kind I believe) it is a little longer in length (from bottom of keyboard to top), a little shorter in width (from side to side), and a little thicker in depth (from bottom of battery to top of upper screen). Not significantly different though, this laptop is just as portable in weight and dimensions. However, it will differ for laptop cases/sleeves.
I am dualbooting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 on it and it works really great. I work on Ubuntu a lot more though, just keeping windows for firmware upgrades.
Overall I am super super happy with this and I love showing it off to fellow cafe inhabitants!
